RunningWorks
RunningWorks
RunningWorks (www.runningworks.org) is a non-profit running program founded in April 2012 to encourage the homeless community to rediscover the power of teamwork, discipline, confidence, self-respect and respect for each other one stride at a time.
Runs will leave from the Urban Ministry Center on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10am followed by a life skill in round group format with lunch immediately following for the neighbors (homeless men and women we serve) at 11:30am. The Urban Ministry Center (www.urbanministrycenter.org) is located at 945 N. College in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina. Each Tuesday and Friday run will consist of a skill-building session focusing on topics such as: self esteem, boundaries, showing up/discipline, doing the next right thing, giving back, relentless forward progress, handling setbacks, unconditional love, or assertion versus aggression. When a neighbor “shows up” for three runs in a row, he or she may keep the running shoes at the URB, and take his/ her RunningWorks t-shirt thereby creating a sense of ownership and place, and rewarding him or her for the discipline required to attend each session. On Wednesday evenings at 6pm, we meet at the NoDa Brewing Company at 2229 North Davidson for the NoDa Run Club and a 1, 3 or 5-mile route through the historic North Davidson neighborhoods. We added this special time for those neighbors who have been fortunate enough to start working throughout the day. This way, they can still join us for a run!
We welcome volunteers and donations of shoes, shorts, t-shirts or socks at any of these runs—or, at one of our drop-off locations located on the website or our Facebook page. Prior to volunteering please visit the FAQ and Volunteer Basics pages at RunningWorks.org.
